Year 10 SEREN Students Explore the Humanities at Cardiff University
Fifteen of our Year 10 SEREN learners had the exciting opportunity to visit Cardiff University to take part in the ENCAP–SEREN Network Event, a day designed to inspire high‑achieving students and introduce them to new academic possibilities within the humanities.
Hosted by the School of English, Communication and Philosophy (ENCAP), the event allowed students to engage with a range of university‑level subjects through a series of interactive workshops.
The day began with an introduction to English Literature, where learners explored how novels, poetry and drama are studied at degree level. They considered how literature links to art, history, technology and the modern world, gaining an insight into the breadth of the subject.
Students then moved on to Creative Writing, discovering how authors craft fiction, poetry, creative non‑fiction and scripts. The session encouraged learners to experiment with language, develop their own creative voice and understand the discipline behind the writing process.
The visit continued with a lively session on Linguistics, the scientific study of language. Learners examined how linguists analyse the structure, use and evolution of language, as well as the powerful ways in which culture and society shape how we communicate.
In the Philosophy workshop, students grappled with some of life’s most challenging questions about belief, identity, society and ethics. They explored ideas about how we should live, what we should believe and how the mind relates to the body — a thought‑provoking introduction to philosophical study.
Throughout the day, our SEREN students represented the school with exceptional maturity, enthusiasm and curiosity. Their willingness to engage with complex ideas and new academic disciplines was fantastic to see.
The experience provided valuable insight into university study and gave learners a broader understanding of the rich and diverse world of the humanities. We are extremely proud of all the students who took part.
