Geography in Italy

History, Landscapes and Culture in Italy

Students from Whitchurch High School recently returned from a fantastic Geography trip to Italy, enjoying an unforgettable programme of fieldwork, cultural exploration and real‑world learning.

The trip began with an incredible visit to Mount Vesuvius, where students hiked up the volcano and were rewarded with breathtaking views over the Bay of Naples. Seeing the steaming crater up close provided an exciting and memorable introduction to the region and set the tone for the days ahead.

One of the highlights of the trip was exploring the stunning Amalfi Coast. Students visited the beautiful cliffside towns of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, taking in the dramatic landscapes and colourful architecture. A boat trip along the coast in glorious sunshine, followed by time on the beach, made for a truly special day and a chance to appreciate the area’s physical and human geography firsthand.

The group then stepped back nearly 2,000 years in history with visits to the remarkable archaeological sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii. At Herculaneum, students observed preserved Roman buildings, carbonised furniture and powerful evidence of the devastating 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius, gaining a deeper understanding of volcanic hazards and their impacts on human settlements. The visit to Pompeii allowed students to walk through ancient streets, including newly excavated areas recently featured in a television documentary, bringing their studies vividly to life.

The trip also included time in Sorrento, where students learned about the town’s history at The Sorrento Experience and enjoyed exploring the local area. A particularly memorable cultural moment came in the evening, when students witnessed Sorrento’s White Procession, a centuries‑old Holy Week tradition dating back to the 14th century. The day ended with a hands‑on experience as students learned how to make their own pizzas, a fun and delicious way to immerse themselves in local culture.

Throughout the trip, students demonstrated enthusiasm, curiosity and excellent behaviour, representing Whitchurch High School with pride. The experience provided valuable opportunities to link classroom learning to real‑world environments while creating lasting memories.

It was a truly inspiring Geography trip, combining physical landscapes, human history and cultural experiences, one that students will remember for years to come.
