Whitchurch High School Students Take Part in ‘Words That Burn’ Poetry Workshop
Students from Lower School at Whitchurch High School recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in the ‘Words That Burn’ poetry workshop—an inspiring initiative led by Swansea University in partnership with Amnesty International UK.
The workshop, organised by English teacher Miss Polly, aimed to encourage young people to use poetry as a powerful form of self-expression, particularly around important themes of identity, justice, and human rights. Over the course of the session, students explored spoken word and creative writing techniques, using their voices to express thoughtful, passionate responses to real-world issues.
The ‘Words That Burn’ project is part of Swansea University’s DylanED programme, which seeks to connect young people with the power of language and literature. Through engaging activities and expert guidance, our students were able to reflect deeply and write compelling pieces that captured both imagination and meaning.
Miss Polly said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to channel their creativity while exploring topics that truly matter. The quality of work they produced was incredible, and many discovered a newfound confidence in their writing.”
The workshop not only celebrated the art of poetry but also nurtured empathy, critical thinking, and a greater understanding of human rights—core values we proudly promote at Whitchurch High School.
