Whitchurch High School Geographers Explore the Land of Fire and Ice

Students from Whitchurch High School recently embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Iceland, exploring its breathtaking landscapes, unique geology, and fascinating culture. Over the course of the trip, our students experienced firsthand the incredible natural wonders that make Iceland such a special place to visit.
The journey began with a relaxing swim at a local pool before settling into our hotel. From there, the itinerary was packed with awe-inspiring experiences, starting with a visit to a geothermal power plant, where students learned how Iceland harnesses its natural resources to generate electricity.

Our explorers then witnessed some of Iceland’s most famous landmarks, including the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the geysir hot spring area, and the incredible Strokkur geyser, which spouts water into the air every few minutes. At Thingvellir National Park, students stood on the continental rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, clearly visible through the cracks that traverse the landscape. The day ended with a magical boat trip from Reykjavik’s old harbour in search of the Northern Lights, a truly unforgettable experience.

The adventure continued with a tour of Iceland’s South Shore, where students visited the Lava Centre to learn about the country’s volcanic activity before taking in the breathtaking views of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. They also explored a glacier, walked along the dramatic black sand beaches of Reynisfjara, and saw the famous 1970s plane wreck, an iconic landmark of the region.

On the final day, students enjoyed a well-earned visit to the Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most famous geothermal spas, before exploring the shops of Reykjavik. The trip ended on a high with ice skating and bowling, rounding off an incredible experience for all involved.

The Iceland trip provided our students with an invaluable opportunity to see geography come to life, from glacial landscapes to geothermal power. It was an enriching and inspiring journey, creating lifelong memories for everyone who took part.
