Year 12 A-Level Biologists Conduct Fieldwork at Garwnant in Bannau Brycheiniog
Year 12 A-Level Biology students from Whitchurch High School ventured to Garwnant in Bannau Brycheiniog for a day of hands-on fieldwork as part of their WJEC A-Level Biology course. Under the guidance of their science teacher, Mr. Grieve, the students participated in kick sampling, a key ecological technique used to study freshwater habitats and assess biodiversity.
The trip provided students with the opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a real-world setting, as they explored the local ecosystem and collected data. Kick sampling, which involves disturbing the riverbed to capture aquatic invertebrates in a net, is an essential method for understanding water quality and the health of aquatic environments.
Mr. Grieve, who oversaw the fieldwork, explained the importance of the practical experience: "Fieldwork is a crucial part of the A-Level Biology curriculum. It allows students to engage with the environment directly and develop a deeper understanding of ecological processes. The skills they’re learning, from data collection to analysis, will serve them well in their academic journey and beyond."
The students worked in groups, carefully sampling from the river, identifying species, and recording their findings. This data will be used as part of their studies on biodiversity, ecosystem dynamics, and environmental health, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of biology in action.
One Year 12 student shared their excitement about the experience: "It was great to get outside and see what we’ve been learning about in the classroom actually happening in nature. Kick sampling helped us understand how scientists monitor ecosystems and why it’s so important to protect them."
The trip to Garwnant not only supported the students’ academic development but also fostered an appreciation for the local environment and the importance of conservation. As part of their A-Level coursework, they will now analyse their results and reflect on the ecological relationships within freshwater habitats.
With a continued commitment to providing enriching educational experiences, Whitchurch High School is proud of the efforts of its A-Level Biologists and looks forward to more exciting fieldwork opportunities in the future.
