The WJEC in Health and Social Care and Childcare provides learners with the opportunity to learn about the development and care of individuals throughout the life cycle from conception to later adulthood. Learners will have the opportunity to understand the influences on human growth and development, behaviour and wellbeing. Learners will also gain an understanding of the social, physical, emotional and cultural needs of people who use care and support services and recognise that everyone has a unique blend of abilities and needs. Learners will learn and evaluate the service provision in Wales and how this supports the development and wellbeing of individuals to be able to make informed decisions now and later in life.
What will learners’ study?
Unit 1: Human growth, development and well-being
This is a written examination that is externally marked and set by WJEC, it is 1 hour 30 minutes in length and is worth 40% of the qualification.
Topics covered include:
Unit 2: Promoting health and wellbeing
This non- exam assessment (NEA) and it is composed of two tasks set and externally moderated by WJEC; this is worth 60% of the qualification.
Task 1: Service provision
Learners must complete a service provision investigation which assesses knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to health and social care and childcare service provision locally and nationally.
Task 2: Health Promotion
Learners must complete a task which assesses their knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to promoting and maintaining health and wellbeing.
Careers within GCSE Health and Social Care and Childcare
This course will provide learners with a variety of choices of careers within the Health, Social Care and Childcare sector. It provides a suitable foundation for the study of Health and Social Care and Childcare at AS or A level in addition to providing a suitable foundation for a range of Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications within Health and Social Care and Childcare.
