Welsh

All students will study Welsh as a Full Course GCSE.

This GCSE course is designed for candidates for whom Welsh is not their first language. The course is geared towards the needs of learners in a bilingual society by developing skills of understanding, and the ability to use Welsh in everyday situations.

The course will enable pupils to use the Welsh language for a variety of purposes. They will develop language learning skills in order to communicate and interact confidently in relevant situations and also to develop their grasp of the language further. They will develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. They will also learn to use Welsh in the workplace and in their communities. It is hoped that pupils will develop a curiosity about the Welsh language.

The GCSE course is made up of two oral internal assessments and two reading and writing examinations, with equal weighting to each component.

The course content can be divided into three broad themes:

  • Employment
  • Wales and the World
  • Youth

Within these themes, pupils will be required to cover the following areas:

  • Listening: understanding and responding to different types of spoken language
  • Speaking: communicating and interacting effectively in speech
  • Reading: understanding and responding to different types of written language
  • Writing: communicating in written form

Welsh is taught in a language block where there are two bright, attractive rooms, with interactive whiteboards which offer a huge range of opportunities for students and staff.
