All students will study WJEC science in Year 10 and 11, following the specification introduced by the Welsh Assembly in September 2016. We currently offer the courses listed below:
Double Award Science
This course will be followed by most students and involves studying science for 9 hours a fortnight, with lessons and exams in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There are 3 GCSE examinations in June of year 10, one for each Science. This is followed by 3 examinations at the end of year 11, again one for each Science. An additional controlled practical assessment completes the award. The results are combined to give a Double Science award which is worth 2 GCSE grades. At the end of year 11 students will have studied enough science to enable them to study A levels in any of the sciences, provided they have achieved a BB grade or higher (on the Higher tier paper).
Triple Science
This involves studying 14 hours of Science a fortnight with 3 separate GCSE awards in Biology, Chemistry and Physics at the end of year 11. There will be 3 GCSE examinations, one for each subject, at the end of year 10. This is repeated with 3 GCSE examinations in year 11, together with a controlled practical assessments in each subject. Students study this course as they particularly enjoy Science or because they expect to study Science subjects at A level in the sixth form.
